Workshop Series: Discussion with Eminent Professor Ben Rampton

The Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Modern Languages at UET Lahore had the immense privilege and honour of hosting Professor Ben Rampton, a distinguished British linguist and Professor of Linguistics at King’s College London. Professor Rampton graciously joined us online to lead a truly inspiring discussion during the workshop Enhancing English Language Skills Together, which was conducted by Dr. Mehvish Riaz on December 9, 2024. The discussion focused on the transformative role of English education in peacebuilding and reshaping identities. Professor Rampton’s thought-provoking perspectives offered valuable guidance on the broader social potential of language. Students not only learnt the functional uses of English but also had the rare opportunity to interact directly with one of the most influential figures in interactional sociolinguistics today. The workshop, which was conducted to provide additional linguistic input and practice opportunities for students interested in developing their English proficiency, was more than just an academic exercise—it was a step towards empowering students with the tools to use language as a bridge for understanding, connection, and positive change. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Rampton for his time and invaluable guidance, which broadened the horizons of our students.
