The University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, has taken a significant initiative to promote social responsibility among engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs by introducing the course Civics and Community Engagement for the first time. This course is currently being offered to the Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineering Departments in the Spring Semester of 2025. In a groundbreaking move, the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Modern Languages organized a seminar titled “SDGs, Civics, and Community Engagement” to mark the momentous occasion on January 22, 2025.
Dr. Mehvish Riaz, Chairperson, Department of Humanities, and an ardent advocate for SDGs, conducted the seminar which served as a clarion call to action, weaving together the ethos of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the critical themes of civic responsibility and community engagement. She articulated the course’s mission with compelling clarity: “An engineer’s responsibility extends beyond machines and systems; it reaches into the heart of communities. This course aspires to create not just innovators but architects of a sustainable future.” With discussions that ranged from local challenges and sustainable solutions to global sustainability frameworks, the event illuminated the transformative power of aligning technical expertise with ethical purpose.
By inaugurating Civics and Community Engagement, UET Lahore has carved a bold new path in education, one where intellect converges with empathy and innovation intertwines with impact. This initiative marks a turning point, crafting a legacy of engineers and scientists who are as committed to humanity as they are to their profession.
