Engineering and Sustainable Development Goals

On Monday, October 16, 2023, Dr. Mehvish Riaz, Chairperson, Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Modern Languages, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, conducted a seminar and shed light on the pivotal role of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the context of Pakistan. The event was a part of the university’s ongoing efforts to equip engineering students with a comprehensive understanding of these vital goals. During the seminar, Dr. Mehvish Riaz underscored the significance of SDGs and their direct relevance to engineering, science and the local context. She emphasized that these global objectives aren’t merely theoretical but have a tangible impact on the issues in Pakistan, including clean energy, water resource management, and infrastructural development for which engineers and scientists must voluntarily solve problems through community service and take sustainable development measures at their workplaces.
Dr. Mehvish Riaz’s engaging discourse illuminated how engineers can act as catalysts for change. They can effectively address these critical challenges by devising innovative and sustainable solutions. The seminar provided engineering students with valuable insights into their future roles as agents of positive change, reinforcing UET’s commitment to preparing its students to be leaders in shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future for Pakistan.
